The Entrepreneurial Arm of the Postal Network

Not all mail carriers are direct government employees. The USPS heavily relies on independent business owners to transport mail across the country via the Highway Contract Route (HCR) system. As an HCR Driver, you are an independent contractor (or an employee of a prime contractor) responsible for hauling bulk mail between major processing plants, or delivering mail to extreme rural outposts that regular USPS routes cannot cover. This is a highly lucrative, specialized driving position that abandons the micromanagerial constraints of a standard postal job in favor of 1099 entrepreneurial freedom.

Operational Focus

• Plant-to-Plant Logistics: Drive commercial box trucks or semi-trailers to transport towering wire cages of sorted mail (General Mail Facility runs) between regional sorting hubs, operating on strict, non-negotiable dispatch schedules.
• Remote Delivery Operations: For "Box Delivery" HCRs, you will act exactly like a Rural Carrier, delivering mail to individual mailboxes on extremely remote routes, utilizing your own personal vehicle.
• Contractual Compliance: You are bound by a federal contract. You must ensure the absolute security of the U.S. Mail, locking your vehicle at all times and maintaining a pristine chain of custody for all postal freight.
• Fleet Management: As an independent contractor, you are entirely responsible for the procurement, fuel, and mechanical maintenance of your delivery vehicle, making strong business acumen essential.

• Zero Sorting Requirements: Plant-to-Plant HCR drivers do not case mail. Your job is purely driving and logistical transport—loading the bulk cages, hitting the highway, and dropping them off at the next post office.

Requirements

Must be at least 21 years old. Requires a valid U.S. driver's license (CDL A or B required for heavy transport routes; standard license for box delivery routes). You must own, lease, or operate a vehicle that strictly meets the capacity specifications of the route contract. You must be able to pass a rigorous federal background screening required to handle U.S. Mail.
